John Wolfgram, Maine's all-time winningest high school football coach, died today, Tuesday, August 5. He was 77 years old.

Wolfgram won 10 state titles while coaching at four Maine high schools. His overall record was 309-92-1 as a head coach. He is the namesake of the annual award given to the Coach of the Year presented by the Maine Principals Association.

Wolfgram served as the head football coach at Cheverus from 2006-2016 and taught English at the school. During that time, his teams won the 2010 and 2011 Class A State Championships. During his two state title years, his teams amassed a 34-game win streak, breaking Wolfgram's previous state win streak record while coaching South Portland High School. After retiring as head football coach at Cheverus, Wolfgram returned as an assistant coach in 2017 and retired from coaching in 2023, the same year he was elected to the Cheverus Athletic Hall of Fame.

President Fr. Robert J. Pecoraro, S.J. said, "Wolfgram's impact on Maine football is tremendous. He taught his players and students the importance of excellence and integrity, and he embodied these two qualities in all he did."
