The Elizabeth Gillis and Leonard F. Ahern Memorial Scholarship recipient for the 2024–2025 school year is Shema Rwaganje '25. The scholarship was established upon the death of Leonard Ahern, a lifelong teacher in the Washington, DC area, and bears his name and that of his beloved mother. The scholarship recipient, a Cheverus senior with demonstrated need, is chosen through a Cheverus selection committee process and is awarded $30,000 towards college. The recipient's fulfillment of the "Grad at Grad" profile, being open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice is the focus of the committee's assessment.

In his application essay, Rwaganje focused on being open to growth. He said, "Cheverus compelled me to be more and to do more…Cheverus has helped me grow into a person who will strive to be the best version of himself."

Rwaganje learned he received the award at basketball practice. He said receiving the news and celebrating with his teammates and coaches was, "phenomenal." He said that the scholarship will, "open a lot of doors for me. Now I can explore options, such as going out of state."

Rwaganje is interested in studying computer science in college but is open to the opportunities that reveal themselves. He is the son of Sarah and Claude Rwaganje and lives in Westbrook.
