Mass of the Holy Spirit
The Mass of the Holy Spirit marks the start of the academic year at Cheverus – and at all Jesuit schools and universities. Since 1548, at the first Jesuit school in Messina, Italy, Jesuit schools have begun the academic year with the Mass of the Holy Spirit. It is an opportunity to gather as a community and to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom in the coming year.
Before Mass, presidents processed in with a candle, representing their class, and there was a special procession welcoming the #cheverusclassof2029 to our community. This year, we were blessed to have four Jesuits present: President Fr. Bob Pecoraro, SJ; Superior of the Jesuits in Maine Fr. Brian Conley, SJ; Biology teacher Fr. Kevin Hughes, SJ; and USA East Provincial Assistant for Pre-Secondary and Secondary Education (PASE) Fr. Mario Powell, SJ. It was a welcome home of sorts to Fr. Powell, who did his regency at Cheverus. #AMDG #Jesuiteducated
